Thought Train http://www.baddollar.com/ebooks/thoughttrain/ http://www.baddollar.com/ebooks/thoughttrain/#comments Thu, 19 Jul 2012 10:30:10 +0000 Alexander Aspinall http://www.baddollar.com/?post_type=bd_ebook&p=133 About Bad Dollar

Bad Dollar is an ongoing anthology of short stories published (currently) exclusively as ebooks. The premise is simple: each story costs $1, remedy but tells a tale of something awful happening when a dollar is spent less wisely. Or if you’re really in a hurry: $1 stories about worse ways to spend a dollar.

Don’t have an eReader? I recommend the keyboard Kindle with every molecule I have.

Short stories are perfect for the Kindle-wielding commuter, just the right length to last an otherwise dull journey. In fact, you can now pick a story to match your exact commute time in New York or in London.

If more people spent their dollar/pound/euro on a short story rather than a weak coffee or a lottery ticket, both they and writers would be happier. So my mission is to connect writers with new audiences, and leave readers thinking ‘now that was a dollar well spent’.

If you enjoy these stories, please support the authors by telling others and spending, we hope, at least one good dollar while you’re here.

So you want to submit a story

Excellent news! Please read the rules below carefully. And drop us an email if you need more information. Good luck.

1. The brief

Your story must hinge around the spending of a single dollar. And this act of spending a dollar must lead to something ‘bad’ happening. E.g. A teacher buys an aspirin from a student that turns out to be ecstasy; a boy uses coin-operated binoculars at the beach and witnesses a murder. And so on. Basically, cure when the reader finishes the story, find they should think: Man, healing spending a dollar on this AMAZING story is WAY better than the way this person spent it.

2. Story length

There are no hard rules around story length. However, it must be ‘a good buy for a dollar’, so if you only write 1,000 words, it’ll have to be the best thing we’ve ever read! As a guideline, think between 2,500-8,000 words.

3. Currency

When we say a dollar, we mean a dollar. It can’t be about spending a pound, or a euro. If you set your story outside the US, Canada or Australia (and some others), you’ll have to be creative to find a reason to make the currency a dollar.

4. Submitting

Send your submission (as a Word document) to submissions@baddollar.com. Or email us for more information.

Finkle and the Fish http://www.baddollar.com/ebooks/finkle-and-the-fish/ http://www.baddollar.com/ebooks/finkle-and-the-fish/#comments Sat, 18 Feb 2012 11:00:24 +0000 andywhitlock http://www.baddollar.com/staging/?post_type=bd_ebook&p=21 About Bad Dollar

There are millions of wonderful short stories bursting to get out of writers across the globe. And the embryonic world of ePublishing makes it easy to put those stories into the public domain. Short stories are perfect for the Kindle-wielding commuter, clinic often just right in length to last an otherwise dull journey.

I thought to myself: A great short story is worth paying a small amount for. Especially when you think of all the times we spend small amounts of money on things like weak coffee, dosage or lottery tickets. And if more people spent that small amount of money on a short story both they and the writers would be happier. Only the makers of Angry Birds would be a bit peeved.

Then I thought (I was on a roll): wouldn’t it be fun to write stories all about the terrible things people could have spent their money on instead? And so Bad Dollar was born: $1 stories about worse ways to spend a dollar.

The mission: connect writers with new audiences, and leave readers thinking ‘now that was a dollar well spent’. So if you enjoy these stories, please support the authors by telling others and spending, we hope, at least one good dollar while you’re here.
